Satellite communications

Advanced wireless technologies are revolutionising various industries by providing faster, more reliable and more secure connectivity.

Advanced wireless technologies are defined by UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology as “technologies that enable the transmission of data in our increasingly digitised economy and society – connecting both people and things. The use of wireless systems can bring a range of business benefits from basic applications relevant to organisations at all scales, through to sophisticated integration with AI and in time, quantum computing. Emerging technologies continue to present new opportunities for innovation such as though advances in photonics, low earth orbit satellite and 6G, in the future.

Wireless Networking Technologies | UKTIN

In this context, advanced wireless technologies cover the full range of wireless solutions used in communications services. While 5G will be a significant area of focus, we also recognise the important role of technologies such as Wi-Fi, satellite communications, private networks and low power wide area networks.

Investment will not be limited to a particular technology or industry. Instead, support will be designed to enable a wide range of applications across multiple sectors.

More detail on eligible advanced wireless technologies will be published in our forthcoming guidance documents.

Available Funding

Capital funding will be available through this scheme. Businesses and public sector organisations based in North Wales will be invited to apply for grants starting from around £20,000 per application.

Applicants will be required to co-fund around 50% of eligible capital costs and wholly fund any associated revenue costs, which cannot be supported with Growth Deal funding.

Grants will be awarded on a first to qualify basis and can be used to invest in advanced wireless technologies must bring financial, productivity or efficiency or other monetisable benefits while demonstrating potential for direct or indirect job creation.

The grant scheme aims to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Creation of jobs in North Wales
  • Increasing net additional gross value added (GVA)
  • Attracting additional investment

What you can expect

The grant scheme will be structured into a two-stage process with funding rounds:

  1. Expression of Interest (EOI)
  2. Full Application

The most important aspect of your EOI is demonstrating how your project will meet the above outcomes, the difference it will make to your organisation, and how prepared it is to move into the delivery phase.
