Satellite connectivity (often called satellite internet) is a way of getting internet access through satellites in space instead of cables or mobile phone masts.
How satellite connectivity works
- A Wi-Fi router connects to a satellite dish
- The dish sends data up to a satellite
- The satellite relays the data to a ground station connected to the internet
- Data comes back the same way, letting your devices browse, stream, or make video calls
Your phone, tablet, or laptop connects by Wi-Fi, just like normal, only the back-end connection is via satellite.
Where Satellite Connectivity is used
Satellite connectivity is most common in places where other internet options are poor or unavailable:
- Rural or remote homes
- Farms and small villages
- Boats and ships
- Remote work sites
- Emergency or disaster areas
Advantages
- Works almost anywhere
- No need for phone lines or fibre cables
- Useful as a backup connection
Limitations
- Can be affected by weather
- Equipment and subscriptions can be more expensive
- Speeds may vary based on satellite coverage
