The region could benefit from stronger mobile connectivity following full business case approval of the 4G+ Growth Deal project, run by Ambition North Wales.
Part of the organisation’s Digital Connectivity Programme, the aim is to tackle long standing mobile coverage challenges across key locations and to maximise economic benefits for the region.
The case for the £6.17 million project was approved by Ambition North Wales and paves the way for improvements in coverage and performance of 4G networks. The project will also support the expansion of 5G networks across the region.
Over five years, the project will promote the use of public sector infrastructure by network operators to expand their coverage, as well as deliver investment to support improvements to digital infrastructure and step up engagement with the telecommunications industry.
North Wales has approximately 79% geographic 4G coverage from all four mobile network operators, compared to the UK average of 88%. With an even higher UK government target of 95%, the approval of the Growth Deal investment has been widely welcomed.
Cllr Mark Pritchard, Chair of Ambition North Wales’s Economic Well-being Sub-Committee and Leader of Wrexham County Borough Council, said:
“Reliable mobile voice and data services are essential not only for businesses and the economy but also for the public sector and households. We were pleased to approve the full business case, allowing us to move forward with this vital project.
“The project’s benefits to the economy are both direct and indirect, driving increased mobile connectivity, which in turn boosts employment and attracts further investment.”
Cllr Nia Jeffreys, Lead Member for Ambition North Wales’s Digital Connectivity Programme and Leader, Cyngor Gwynedd, said:
“This project is about more than just improving signals - it’s about unlocking opportunity in key areas which are currently underserved. We need to ensure that there is more of a level playing field so that North Wales has the infrastructure to thrive in the digital age.”
The Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said:
"This significant investment marks a substantial step forward towards strengthening digital connectivity across North Wales. By improving 4G coverage and supporting 5G expansion, it will help address infrastructure challenges that have held back economic growth and digital inclusion in the region.
"Reliable mobile connectivity is a necessity in today's world. This project will support businesses to innovate and grow whilst also empowering residents to access vital online services and connect with friends and family."
Wales Office Minister Dame Nia Griffth said:
"As part of our Plan for Change we are delivering jobs and investment to all parts of Wales, including improvements in mobile connectivity via our funding of the North Wales Growth Deal.
"Fast and reliable digital connections are absolutely vital for households and businesses across north Wales, helping to drive economic growth, boost tourism and improve leisure time for local residents."
