Different Types of IoT (Internet of Things)

Consumer IoT (CIoT)

Devices used by individuals in everyday life.

Examples: Smart home devices (smart plugs, thermostats, lighting) Wearables (Fitbit, Apple Watch)

Smart appliances (connected fridges, ovens)

Home security systems (smart cameras, door sensors)

Personal health devices (smart scales, sleep monitors)

Purpose: Convenience, automation, lifestyle insights, personal health tracking

Industrial IoT (IIoT)

Used in factories, energy sites, logistics operations, and infrastructure.

Examples: Machine sensors (temperature, vibration, pressure) Predictive maintenance systems

Robotics & AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles)

Remote asset and pipeline monitoring

Smart grid systems

Industrial automation and SCADA support

Purpose: Real-time operations, reduced downtime, improved safety, higher productivity

Commercial IoT

IoT systems used across commercial settings such as healthcare, retail, hospitality, and offices.

Examples: Connected medical devices (monitors, pumps)

Building management systems (HVAC, lighting, occupancy sensors)

Retail IoT (smart shelves, shopper analytics)

Hotel guest connectivity systems

Smart ticketing and visitor experience systems (e.g., AR in attractions)

Purpose: Better service, improved building efficiency, enhanced customer/visitor experience

Smart City IoT

Large-scale IoT for public services and urban management.

Examples: Smart streetlights Air quality monitoring Traffic and parking sensors Waste management sensors

Public safety systems (CCTV, emergency alerts)

Purpose: Sustainability, safety, efficient public services, data-driven city planning.

Common IOT Platforms

LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network)

NB-IoT (Narrow Band IoT)
