Approval of the Outline Business Case for the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub has cleared the way for the next stage of a £22 million project which will establish a new green energy facility in North Wales.
Led by Menter Môn in partnership with Hynamics, part of the EDF Group, the project is looking to secure North Wales Growth Deal funding through Ambition North Wales. It will provide the infrastructure needed to support early hydrogen adoption, helping businesses access a local supply of low-carbon energy as demand develops.
The project will see a 5MW green hydrogen production site developed at Parc Cybi, Holyhead. The hub which has already secured planning permission, will support the transition to cleaner energy by providing locally produced hydrogen for harder-to-decarbonise sectors, including transport, logistics, construction, port operations and events.
Councillor Gary Pritchard is Leader of Ynys Môn Council and Ambition North Wales lead member for the low carbon energy programme. He said:
“Approval of the Outline Business Case is an important milestone for the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub and shows the confidence Ambition North Wales has in the role this project can play in supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
“This is about more than producing green hydrogen. It is about creating the infrastructure, skills and confidence needed to support businesses, attract investment and help build a new clean energy sector here.”
The project will combine £8.6 million of public investment, including support from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and Ambition North Wales, with £13.6 million private investment led by Hynamics.
Over its planned 15-year operating life, the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub is expected to produce almost 9,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and deliver approximately 88,000 tonnes of carbon savings, while supporting new skills, jobs and supply chain opportunities across North Wales.

With Outline Business Case approval secured, the project can move into the next phase to secure commercial agreements and begin developing the Full Business Case for consideration later in the year.
